Gleaners

“Beggars kneel but gleaners bow”, Agnès Varda from the film ‘The Gleaners and I’ (2000)

Gleaning is the time-honoured method of gathering the left-over grain, vegetables and fruit after harvest. Ancient biblical laws were enacted gather this waste to feed the poor. Resources are being over taxed. Waste occurs on the farm, in stores, and at home. Recent studies estimate that 40 percent or more of all cultivated food is never eaten. Food Rescue is now a growing business but urban gleaners still preserve this custom.
